Why is teleportation a problematic feature in online games?
When playing an online game, your device continually sends updates to the server regarding your current position. For instance, your location might be communicated as coordinates like (0, 30, 90). This allows the server to track your movements in real-time and ensures a smooth gameplay experience for everyone.
The server expects these updates to reflect smooth and predictable movements. However, if a player teleports — meaning their location suddenly jumps from one set of coordinates to another, such as from (0, 30, 90) to (90, 60, 250) — it can create significant problems. This sudden and unexpected change is challenging for the server to process and can lead to issues such as:
-
Desynchronization: The server, along with other players’ devices, may struggle to keep up with the new position, causing a lack of synchronization in the game world or crash.
-
Exploits: Some players might exploit teleportation to cheat, bypassing obstacles or avoiding combat, which undermines the fairness of the game and can lead to penalties or bans.
